Acute stress is the type of stress most people are familiar with and is usually caused by a sudden event or situation. It’s typically short-lived and can range from mild to severe. Common causes of acute stress include taking a test, going to a job interview, or dealing with an unexpected illness or death.

Chronic stress occurs over a longer period of time, usually weeks or months. This type of stress is often caused by events like a job loss, a divorce, or a long-term health issue. Chronic stress can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and fatigue, and it can also put you at risk for more serious health conditions.

Episodic acute stress is a type of stress that occurs in episodes, or short bursts of intense stress, that come and go. This type of stress is often caused by things like financial problems or relationship issues. Episodic acute stress can lead to physical symptoms like headaches and chest pain, as well as emotional symptoms like anxiety and irritability.

Finally, there is post-traumatic stress, which is caused by a traumatic event. Examples of traumatic events may include war, a car accident, or a natural disaster. Post-traumatic stress can cause intense feelings of fear, anxiety, and depression, as well as physical symptoms like headaches and chest pain.

No matter which type of stress you’re experiencing, it’s important to find ways to cope with it. This can include things like exercising, meditating, and talking to someone you trust. It’s also important to recognize when you’re feeling overwhelmed and take steps to reduce your stress levels.
